PFC Walt Christian Larsen recalls his time as a HUMAN GUINEAPIG at Fort Detrick, Maryland. I gave my youthful arm for experimentation when young and foolish. We are Cold War veterans of the fabulous fifties, that are now old and wiser, hopefully? Forgive me please for truth as so perceived, for I threw away that uniform long before the demons of pride had convinced me to abide where others gather at Loma Linda. Yes, I hated the US Army and of it's rules for fools, only then when my privacy was compromised and circumcised, like I was not human at all, but just another number as I recall when released in September 1958. It was like I had been born again~~~~~~~~ within the twinkling embers of embryonic fires of my most exquisite desires. Yes, she was most beautiful, and still is after almost forty four years of marriage. It was at Fort Detrick, when I became aware that I needed a wife, and with a simple prayer she came into my life, and then I knew great happiness, and never looked back. WCL. Now, a welcome to all US ARMY WHITECOATS of the Cold War years 1954-1973, and for all visitors who come to this site. This page is dedicated to the memory of one of our medical military leaders; Brigadier General William Tigertt, Who is seen in the photo with Ken Jones and their wives in 1989 at Frederick, Maryland. General Tigertt was our leader through most of the 19 year episode of our service within intrigue and secrecy. Also I would like to bring to your attention one of our brothers; mister Giles Dupuis PFC, who served at Frederick, Maryland in 1957 and 1958. He was from Fortuna, California and graduated from Monterey Bay Academy. Many years ago, he became the victim of a ghastly murder, and took a rifle bullet through the neck. Such a terrible thing to happen to this good fellow, and I still recall the time in 1957 when he asked me to go with him to be reassigned to Hawaii. To see his image, go to the member links at the bottom of "About" Page: I just have been notified on the 27th of January, 2002 of the death of our friend ROGER MICKELSON from the state of Minnesota. He was at Fort Detrick in 1957 and 1958 and held the job of X-Ray technician. He was a real nice person and will be missed. I was told that when they found his body, his treadmill was still running. US Army Whitecoats were a select few, and it's a shame that there is obviously no togetherness as seen by one. I wish that we would come together and share old times, and to tell of our faith and of what it means to us? Maybe it's just this simple website that is a turnoff, I hope not! I might have been terribly naive, but still I am not embarrassed to admit, that I was a "HUMAN GUINEAPIG." In fact I am very proud that I could find some way to serve my country without the violence associated with a bloody war ! So far alas, I haven't received one photograph to install here, and it seems a shame that we don't seem to know how to have some fun. Write to me at: WaltChrstn@netzero.net
Quite a select bunch of fellows, from all parts of the country. Many were of high intellect, and then later to became doctors, dentists, lawyers and teachers of high degree; their time within the laboratories, giving them valuable experience within the ways of science. And of course there were just plain folks like I was; good citizens that bared their arms for the good of country and the world. Wonderful Adventist fellows, and I admired one beyond the others; his name was "Rudy." I've read somewhere that there are Angels within human form still walking among us, sharing and caring. He was a six foot four loner, and uncommonly handsome. He was an Indian fellow and a true christian and then some within glinted gleams of humanity. PFC Rudy was a one of a kind of fellow within the confines of the military barracks, and this included everywhere he went around Washington DC. Alas for he, for there were those whom would oppose this young man, as evil always finds a way to spoil the day, to bring sadness and dismay to nice people unto this very day. There were bullies too, brutes within uniform whom would taunt him for his purity of soul, and of his uniqueness and loneliness. That wonderful,"terrible loner," seemed all alone, and why didn't he strike back at them within his towering strength; this was my only question? He just meekly turned the other cheek, as the Bible says it so, never looking back with anger or hate. And if there were Angels walking among us as our guests, he would be my guess? TRACES WITHIN UNFORGETTABLE FACES: Returning to a time of intrigue and of military silence, and recalling significant experiences within the black world of science and technology.
